The mission of St. John’s Lutheran Church is to live,
share and grow in God’s love through Jesus Christ. Following Jesus’ command to love God and our neighbors, the people of St. John’s serve with joy in our congregation, community, region, nation and throughout the world. From children making friends with a new young refugee to teenagers preparing meals for those living with HIV at Feast Incarnate in Philadelphia to adults delivering meals to homebound elderly to everyone enthusiastically raising funds to support two hospitals in Tanzania, social ministry at St. John’s involves our entire congregation, plus friends. Blessed by God, we are to be a blessing to others. Social ministry takes us across the street, into the city and around the world. Through it all we pray for God’s kingdom to come and for God’s will to be done on earth as in heaven. In The Small Catechism, Martin Luther reminds us that this happens without our prayer or even our efforts, but we ask that it may come about in and among us. And when it does, we rejoice, sharing God’s love with great delight! You are invited to join us in this adventure of mission and ministry. There’s lots to do and plenty of opportunities to serve. If there is a ministry that you are passionate about and would like to further explore, just speak with the pastor or any of our Social Ministry leaders. The kingdom is coming and it’s changing the whole world — including you and me.
Everywhere you go in our community, you discover people from St. John’s serving others with joy. They’re coaching youth teams, leading scout troops, serving as volunteers, providing leadership to community boards, delivering meals, picking up trash, raising money to fight cancer, and on and on. God has moved “into our neighborhood,” enabling us to serve with confidence. To learn more click here...
A member of St. John's once said she loved being part of a congregation that "gives our children the world." Our global ministry involves children, youth and adults in both long-term and short-term mission throughout the world. Since 1997, we have been in a missionary partnership with Dr. Mark and Linda Jacobson in Arusha, Tanzania. We support Selian Lutheran Hospital and helped to build the new Arusha Lutheran Medical Center in northern Tanzania. Since 2004, we have sponsored five students at the MaaSae Girls Lutheran Secondary School in Monduli, Tanzania. Other long-term mission projects include Refugee Resettlement, Fair Trade Sales and World Hunger Relief. Short-term projects include raising money for disaster relief throughout the world, most recently in Haiti. To learn more about the Global Ministry of St. John's, click here.... |
At St. John’s, faith is an action verb – and our young people are ready for action! Talk to them, and you’ll find out they’re deeply concerned about the needs of their friends, their community, and the world. They want to walk the path of their own faith journey, figure out how to live as faithful people in their context, and work for justice and peace in the world. And yes, they want to have fun while they’re doing it! To learn more, click here....
